We worked together with Elevate Glasgow PSPVenture ScotlandPhoenix FuturesThe Village Storytelling Centre and Theatre Nemo to create a unique Personal Development course for adults in recovery. The course launched on February 19th and participants spent six weeks taking part in interesting sessions from each of the partner organisations focused on personal development.

As part of their sessions with The Village Storytelling Centre, participants worked together to write a new song from scratch, then performed it in front of an audience at a celebration event on 28th March. You can watch a video of their performance on our Facebook page. We have shared the lyrics below.

Congratulations again to all participants for their hard work and creativity!

“Family life could have been good
Young loves in our neighbourhood
They came to breaking point
And went their separate ways
Duty called/Medals and honours
Providing for their sons and daughters
Since they have returned back home
Spending all their time alone

At the age of 17
Most of life remained unseen
Andi packed their bag
And left for overseas
A promised life
New destination
Arriving in an unknown station
Tormented life is filled with hate
A Thompson bullet changed our fate

Through the chaos
The sun still shines
Joy and sadness
Intertwined
There’s a whole new world to discover
But first of all you have to recover

Opioids to kill the pain
Ended in a losing game
Just because they’re legal
Doesn’t make them regal
A sinner’s soul
Child of a nation
Given no appreciation
Has no structure in their life
Only struggle, pain and strife

Recovery seems far away
Death is slowly on its way
I had to pull it back
Thinking of the future
Rehab was key
Helped me discover
What I needed to recover
Found the life I choose to live
I’ve got so much more to give

Through the chaos
The sun still shines
Joy and sadness
Intertwined
There’s a whole new world to discover
But first of all you have to recover.
